- Shanhou feels like a different world! It's Kinmen's most iconic and best-preserved historic village.
- The special layout of the houses makes them extremely photogenic!
- Soak up the atmosphere by staying overnight in one of the traditional house B&Bs
- Unlike most Kinmen villages, there's food to buy in Shanhou.

If you're at all interested in architecture, Shanhou Folk Culture Village is a must!

It has the most complete range of traditional Minnan-style houses, built between 1876 and 1900. Also from that time, there's a school building and the Wang clan ancestral shrine.
Shanhou Folk and Culture Village
The 3 symmetrical rows of houses built into the hillside all face the sea. Take time to look at the exquisite architectural details. Having two courtyards is a special feature.
Shanhou Folk Culture Village
You can wander into two of the houses. One is furnished in Qing Dynasty era-style, with a traditional Chinese bed, typical ancestral hall and kitchen as it would have been used before gas and electricity.

The other house displays photos and information about similar Overseas Chinese sets of houses built in Mainland China around the same time as Shanhou.

    18 Houses Wang Village

    4 2018-09

The village of 18 houses were built by a successful businessman, Mr. Wang. It’s kind of Chinese tradition that successful people like to feedback to his/her community. The most popular way is to build a school or something to memorize in his/her hometown. All of them are 18 houses including a school and a family temple. The architecture is well kept but too much business are on the premise to negatively impact the outlook and appearance. A nice spot to visit.

    Fujianese houses

    3 2018-09

Shanhou Folk Culture Village has about twenty or so Fujianese houses on display. Unlike the Shuitou Village which is an actual living village, Shanhou had bit of a theme park vibe with the souvenir vendors crowding near the entrance. However, it was nice to be able to enter most of the houses. The houses are very close together here so it only takes one tour bus full of visitors to make it feel crowded but it’s still a great place for photos and architecture enthusiasts.
