Intolerable! We were there for two nights over Chinese New Year. The village was beautiful so was the I-Shan property. Unfortunately the room was filled with intolerable odor and the bathroom was filthy. Though I prepared myself for staying at a B&B accommodation, I did not anticipate how intolerable it was. We reserved the family room, which should “sleep 4 to 5”, but it was very small, just enough for a double bed and a small 2-seater sofa. There was no place for luggages. No closet or cupboards. Every bedding was old and odored. The smell was so strong and disturbing that I was not able to sleep. Eventually I had to fold my coat and cover the pillow. Even the sofa smelled bad. I wonder how long they have not replaced pillows and blankets and cleaned the room thoroughly. Bathroom was just as bad. Towels were no longer white, turned grey in fact. Tiled floor was old and dirty. Dirty plastic slippers. I ended up not taking a shower while I was there. There is a mezzanine floor in the room, but we were told because we registered as a couple only, ie two guests, we should not use it. It was dark and dusty, a narrow wooden staircase leads up to it. A bit spooky actually. Breakfast was not eatable. We had coffee only for two days. All in all, will not recommend to anyone. It is a beautiful property, but on the outside only.
Perfect homebase for KinmenThis quaint B&B is located in ZhuShan village in Kinmen and run by two sisters and a brother. Though the location is somewhat more remote in Kinmen standards, it is still very close to most of the major sites, and being a tad removed from the central crowds adds to the charm of the place. The place is located inside an old Kinmen courtyard home, so its a prefect way to experience a modern touched up version of old Kinmen life, and its in the middle of ZhuShan one of the well-preserved historic villages in Kinmen. The rooms are clean, albeit a bit small, cozy, with comfortable beds and fun cheeky interior touches (one of the sisters studied interior design). Bathrooms are clean, with all basic amenities provided, there are even slippers which is more than some hotels can say. The public areas are well kept, cozy, and well designed/ appointed. The main hall which houses the family's real altar and is the main breakfast/ hangout spot is quite nice. Breakfast is served daily with a rotation of Kinmen congee from various local spots, soy bean milk, you tiao (chinese churro), shao bing, and buns; and upon request you can ask for real coffee. The small staff and management here are all very friendly. They treat you like family and allow you to treat the place like home, giving you keys to freely come and go as you please, checkin checkout was simple and breezy. And if you have any questions about the history of Kinmen, the B&B or travel (the sisters are flight attendants!) dont hesitate to ask, the owners are very conversational! Would definitely return here when I return to Kinmen.
Good family-run B&B in traditional villageI-Shan is a sweet, low-key homestay in a refurnished Fujian house and a traditional village. Location-wise it is not far from Jincheng, about a 10min drive (the staff can also help you call for a taxi). It's a little difficult to locate the first time, so do keep their number on hand and let them know ahead what time you are arriving. My family took a fairly spacious and clean quadruple room, which comprised of a loft level and can comfortably sleep 4. The mattress upstairs was rather stiff, though ok. Room had both heater and a/c, and wifi and hot shower were reliable. TV signal was poor (apparently due to weather), but then there were only a few local channels anyway. Noise insulation wasn't great but there is little the hotel could do, as 'hardware' is standard with the traditional house. The family running it made a genuine effort to make sure we were comfortable. Traditional congee-and-bread breakfast, though simple, was (partially) home made and delicious. The ladies made a good cuppa as well. They were very chatty as well, and my wife and I enjoyed the chats over cups of Chinese tea and coffee. Overall we really enjoyed our 3-night stay, and could have easily spent 4 or 5 to enjoy the slow pace of Kinmen.
Very relaxing and pleasant stayIn a nut shell: - Excellent management and service - Beautiful and peaceful environment - REAL coffee served in the morning - Clean room - Good wifi - Comfortable bed The building is very cool! You'll get a nice traditional Chinese feel from staying here. One downside is that the walls and doors are thin so when people are outside you can hear them really well and it feels less private, but thankfully it's in a quiet village so it didn't bother us very much. The B&B is only about 25min. via electric scooter from the ShuiTou ferry port. I recommend renting a scooter for about 150 RMB right across the street from the port, make sure to bring your drivers license from whatever country you're from though. Also, if you have an international drivers license than you can rent a gas scooter for half the electric scooters price!
Hong Kong, China
great stayWe stayed there for 3 nights. The B & B is full of characters, each room with it's own design. The B & B however is a 10 minutes bus ride from the town center, and the buses run only once every half hour or one hour, with the last bus running at around 8 in the evening. So it can be a bit tricky if you do not have your own transport, bearing in mind that taxis are few and far between in Kinmen. Of course, I presume you can arrange the transport with the B & B beforehand if you want. As the B & B does not provide dinner, you have to time your dinner in town to catch the last bus back. The breakfast starts at 7am, and if you leave before that, you would have to miss the breakfast which is only a simple one anyway. In spite of all that, the B & B is really tranquil at night, and you can chat with other guests in the sitting room if there are any. For one night, I think we had the whole house to ourselves. Go to bed early, as the birds will wake you up early, which is extremely pleasant.
